I Am The Record Label: Volunteers Needed

My new project, I Am The Record Label (iamtherecordlabel.org), will need a few good people in the coming couple of months.

I wish I could say it paid in money, but it won't. All proceeds generated from ad/donation revenue go to covering hosting and bandwidth costs, as well as any future costs (such as giveaways and contests for the bands & fans).

What you do get from it, however is the opportunity to help music be free.

First, take a look at this. That's the current planned layout for the front page of the site. You'll notice two editorial sections - one with general news and features on artists, and one with industry commentary - that we'll need writers for. Of course, it won't be updated daily, but I do want people who are involved in the industry and can write a little bit (decent grammar and spelling please). I want to have enough original content from our staff to be able to update at least 3 times a week. Opinion pieces are welcome, so if one staffer writes on a recent RIAA law suit (or lack thereof), another staffer is free to write their own piece on the subject. In fact, I'd encourage formalized debate pieces. This will be our bread and butter for search engine traffic!

Second (and most important) is the fact that we'll need people to listen to each and every band that comes across to the site, and check the band again every few months to give them a general thumbs up or thumbs down. Staff ratings are going to be just as important as the fan ratings, as it ensures that every band that comes to our site gets some attention; many first-time visitors will only check out fans with existing positive ratings, so the editorial rating ensures that EVERY band gets an opportunity to catch a one-time/first-time visitor.

You MUST be a fan of many kinds of music. You had better be either a big fan of live shows, or a performer yourself. You should also be reliable; if you say you are going to write an op-ed piece on something, you should do it. The indie music industry can use all the help it can get, and that's what you are signing up for. No HTML experience necessary; all written pieces will be submitted through me for review before they are posted, so I'll handle formatting (just make sure you indicate the necessary formatting). Eventually this may change; I'll have style guides in place, though, so it won't take much of a learning curve.

After all this, you might be wondering what the benefits are. Well, first off, you'll be able to claim this on a resume, should you want to get into music journalism. Second, you'll get a chance to discover bands that could be the next-big-thing, and show them your support.

I'd like to launch with 5 people, eventually expanding as our artist list grows.
